UC Berkeley Library Proxy Server Service

Safari 2 Fixed Under Mac OS 10.4.3

We are happy to announce that Safari 2 under Macintosh OS 10.4.3 is now working well with the Library's proxy service.

Macintosh users may remember that, when OS 10.4 ("Tiger") was released early in 2005, the Safari 2 browser which came with that release was almost impossible to use with the proxy service. It required the user to authenticate to the proxy service over and over again, with every request for a page of licensed content. This problem stemmed from the way the Automatic Proxy Configuration feature was implemented in the 10.4 operating system.

This problem has been fixed in Mac OS 10.4.3. Safari users will now need to authenticate to the proxy service only once during a session, specifically when they first request a licensed electronic resource. We encourage Macintosh users to upgrade their systems to OS 10.4.3 and to feel free to use Safari as their browser of choice.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Mark Malone of Apple Computers for representing the Library's interests in solving this problem with Safari. Mark contacted us when the Safari problem first surfaced, offerred to make sure the issue was resolved, and met with us on several occasions to guarantee that our needs were met. Our thanks go to Mark and to the technical staff at Apple.
