UC Berkeley Library Proxy Server Service

Safari 2 Problems

Safari 2 which was just released with the Macintosh OS 10.4 ("Tiger") fails at this time to be usable with the Library's proxy service. Two modes of failure have been reported:

  • Under one scenario, the browser causes the user to authenticate repeatedly with each request of a licensed page;

  • A second type of failure has been reported, in which the browser asks for authentication when the user first requests a licensed page, but then fails to direct subsequent requests for licensed content to the proxy server.

Users should therefore not attempt to use the new Safari for access to the Library's proxy service at this time. Please use a browser that is known to work in the Mac OS 10.4 environment, such as Netscape or Mozilla.

Interestingly, representatives from Apple have contacted us and seem interested in making Safari the browser of choice for Mac users. We have reported these problems to Apple through these contacts, and we hope that Apple will soon be remedying the problems we have observed with Safari 2. If and when these issues are rectified, we will report here in this space, so please check back. We have no idea, however, when a fixed version of the Safari browser will be available.
