UC Berkeley Library Proxy Server Service
Safari 1.2 Now Supports Automatic Proxy Configuration
Safari 1.2 now supports Automatic Proxy Configuration
when run under Mac OS 10.3.2.
This feature is not available on Macintosh operating systems earlier than 10.3.2 --
even Mac OS 10.3 is not sufficient.
As a result, Mac users with sufficiently up-to-date systems may now consider using
of Safari with the Library's proxy service.
See below for instructions for configuring Safari 1.2.
Unfortunately, problems in Safari's implementation make it less than advisable
at this time. A few problems reported so far are these:
- Safari cannot be used with the PIN-authenticating proxy service.
Authentication for the PIN proxy service is triggered when the browser requests a
proxied document and the proxy server returns a message to the browser
(specifically, the 407 "Proxy Authentication Required" status code).
The browser is supposed to respond to this condition by displaying the
"Username/Password" dialog box.
Safari, however, fails to respond to this message correctly and merely
reports an error condition.
- Safari can be used successfully with the
CalNet-authenticating proxy service.
However, users report that some resources
fail to display properly in Safari.
Those include:
- Black Studies Database
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QBLK
- Family & Society Studies Worldwide
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QFSD
- Left Index
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QLI
- Music Catalog (Library of Congress)
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QLCMU
- RILM Abstracts of Music Literature
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QRLM
- RIPM: International Index to Nineteenth-Century Music Periodicals
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QRIPM
- RISM International Inventory of Musical Sources After 1600

- Sexual Diversity Studies

- Wildlife Worldwide

Here is how to configure Safari 1.2 to use the CalNet-authenticating
proxy service:
- Make sure that you're using Mac OS X version 10.3.2 (or
higher) and Safari 1.2 (or higher). If necessary, start up System
Preferences and use the "Software Update" control panel to download and
install these upgrades.
- Start up Safari, and choose "Preferences" from the "Safari" menu.
- Click on the "Advanced" icon.
- In the "Proxies:" option, click the "Change Settings..." button.
- System Preferences should start up automatically, with the "Network"
panel open and "Proxies" selected. You may need to log in with your
Administrator password to make these changes.
- Under "Select a proxy server to configure:", choose "Automatic Proxy
Configuration." (You may need to scroll down the list to the end to see
this choice).
- In the "Proxy Configuration File" text box, enter the URL
for the CalNet-authenticating proxy server's configuration script:
http://proxy.lib.berkeley.edu:7777/proxy.pac
- Click the "Apply now" button.
- Close the Network control panel.
It is not necessary to restart Safari to begin using the Library proxy
server.
Currently our information regarding Safari and its usability with the proxy service
depends on reports we receive from users with Macintosh installations. As we learn more,
the content of this page may change, so feel free to check back at a later time.
