UC Berkeley Library Proxy Server Service
The Proxy Servers Reject Unauthorized Content The Library's proxy servers now reject requests for pages which are not known to the servers' automatic proxy configuration script, proxy.pac. The proxy service is intended to provide off-campus access to the Library's licensed electronic journals and databases. The online documentation provides instructions for setting up supported browsers for Automatic Proxy Configuration with the proxy.pac configuration script. However, an increasing number of individuals have configured their browsers to pass all web traffic through the Library's proxy servers, which causes a significant increase in both the traffic passing through the proxy servers and the amount of garbage accumulating in the servers' logs. Furthermore, much of this traffic has been for sites which many would consider objectionable and have no place being requested through an official University service. For this reason, both the CalNet-authenticating proxy server and the PIN-authenticating proxy server now check requests against the proxy.pac contents and refuse to serve pages which are not represented in that script. It is still possible to configure ones browser to pass all requests through the proxy servers, but users who do so will have to work around the fact that only licensed Library resources will be served. Such users will have to reconfigure their browsers in order to resume normal use. Copyright (C) 1999-2004 by The Library, University of California, Berkeley. All rights reserved.
